In an earlier post, we presented an overview of CBD. Today, we’ll be focusing on one of the more popular uses for CBD – relief from stress and anxiety. Anxiety and stress relief is a big reason why you can find hundreds of varieties of CBD online, in pharmacies, and in stores across the country. And it’s no wonder so many people are turning to CBD for stress and anxiety relief. According to research, nearly 30% of Americans suffer from some sort of anxiety-related disorder, making it the most common psychiatric disorder in the country. In addition, many medications used for anxiety can take time to work and can have side-effects that make them difficult to tolerate. But before you go out and try CBD for yourself, it’s important to understand what the latest research says.

CBD for Stress and Anxiety

You can find all sorts of claims about the health benefits of CBD on the internet. However, it’s important to recognize that in a lot of areas, CBD research is still in the very early stages. And for some health conditions, CBD may offer no benefits. However, there are health conditions – such as certain seizure disorders, insomnia, anxiety and chronic pain – where the research is very promising. In fact, a recent study shows that CBD may be helpful for individuals with a history of anxiety disorders. The study, completed in January of this year, included 72 individuals who had a history of anxiety and sleep disorders. Researchers gave each participant 25mg of CBD per day in capsule form. They followed up with the study participants after 1 month of treatment, and again after 2 months. Here’s what they found:

  • After 1 month – Nearly 79% of the study participants indicated an improvement in anxiety symptoms.
  • After 2 months – Nearly all of the 79% who had shown improvements after 1 month of treatment continued to show an improvement in anxiety symptoms.

The results of this study are certainly impressive. But it’s important to point out that some people dropped out of the study, and others actually experienced a worsening of anxiety symptoms. However, the researchers did indicate that CBD is a very promising option for anxiety treatment, and that additional research is warranted.

Side-effects of CBD

While it’s easy to get excited about the potential of CBD to help with stress and anxiety, it’s also important to remember that CBD can have side-effects and interactions with common medications. Some common CBD side-effects can include nausea, fatigue and irritability. In addition, CBD can interact with certain medications (including many common psychiatric medications). So it’s important to talk to your doctor before trying CBD for anxiety and stress relief.
