In previous posts, we’ve discussed the effects of CBD on various health conditions, such as chronic pain and anxiety. This week, we’ll be reviewing another common use for CBD – insomnia and sleep disorders.

These days, CBD is at the top of everyone’s list of natural treatment options to try for all sorts of health problems. And seeing as nearly 1 in 4 Americans deal with insomnia each year, it’s no wonder CBD has become a popular alternative remedy for this condition.

In fact, a recent Gallup poll showed that nearly 11% of those that have tried CBD use it for insomnia.

So today, we’ll be taking a deeper dive into why CBD has become so popular for insomnia and other sleep-related issues.

How does CBD work?

CBD is one of the primary cannabinoids found in the cannabis and hemp plants. Unlike its close cousin, THC, CBD does not cause you to get “high”.

CBD works by interacting with our endocannabinoid system and its receptors to create potential therapeutic effects, like pain relief and stress reduction.

And as more and more people begin to turn to natural treatment options, CBD has gotten a lot of attention for its potential to help millions of people deal with everyday health issues, such as insomnia.

CBD and sleep

CBD’s newfound popularity is leading to a host of research on this cannabinoid’s potential health benefits. While there are still relatively few studies on CBD and sleep, there is some research that suggests it might help.

In one study, 72 adults with sleep and anxiety issues were given 25mg of CBD. Those with anxiety took the CBD in the morning, and those with sleep issues took it in the evening.

The results of the study showed that CBD helped decrease levels of anxiety and helped those with issues sleeping as well. Nearly 80% of the patients who took CBD to help with anxiety reported decreased anxiety levels after the first month, and nearly 67% of patients who took CBD for sleep reported improved sleep after the first month.

The study indicates that CBD may be helpful for those with insomnia, but more research is needed to confirm the results of the study.

In addition to its potential direct effect on sleep, CBD has been shown in studies to help with anxiety and pain – two conditions that are known to disrupt sleep.

So while research is still being conducted on the direct benefits of using CBD for sleep, many people are finding that CBD can help them with conditions associated with insomnia, such as chronic pain and anxiety.

Is CBD safe for insomnia?

More clinical trials are needed to prove the impact of CBD on people with insomnia.

While CBD has been proven to be relatively safe and benign in clinical trials, the effectiveness of using CBD for insomnia is still an open question.

More controlled research is needed to determine whether or not CBD can help those of us who deal with chronic sleep problems, such as insomnia. In the meantime, be safe and talk to your healthcare provider before trying CBD for any medical condition, including insomnia.
